In mid-November of last year, I found out the days repeatedly hunched down вЂњon the setвЂќ from my directorвЂ™s chair had aggravated a degenerative disk condition and I had to have an emergency fusion of my L4 and L5 vertebrae, which delayed production.ДЄnd that was fine with me, because the weeks in traction just gave me more time to plan out how I was going to convincingly pull off the dramatic conclusion of the movie вЂ“ a French Connection-like car chase involving a mail truck, a souped-up Sedgeway, and a puckish army of pre-teen skate-punks (yet another bow to studio pressure, as they desperately wanted youth appeal and had already lined up a bunch of bands I had never heard of вЂ“ U2 anyone? вЂ“ for the soundtrack). I began primary photgraphy on the film in early-November of last year. It ended up being 1-part The Searchers, 1-part Taxi Driver, and 1-part Splash (the studio pressured me to write a love interest into the script so I went with the proven box office winner of 'love interest=mermaid'). So I wrote a variation on The Searchers that stayed true to the themes, but switched the plot from an outsider searching for his kidnapped niece, to an obsessive-compulsive mail carrier with a spotless delivery record haunted by the thought that he may have erroneously mixed 1st class with 3rd class media mail and his attempt to rectify his error. John Wayne was larger than life and I was already looking at a limited pool of actors who could fit inside of a gutted-out Dell Dimension 4200, let alone one who had the swagger, panache, and range to fill the DukeвЂ™s shoes вЂ“ albeit at 1/100th scale.

It had nothing to do with the challenge of re-creating authentic western vistas and horse chases across vast expanses of empty plains inside what amounted to a 6вЂќx14вЂќ sound stage. Not on a computer using fancy software, but actually inside of a gutted out computer using very small cameras, lights, props and a tiny troupe of actors.Д«ut the more I got into The Searchers, I realized that this wasnвЂ™t the film I wanted to make. My goal was to film a frame-by-frame recreation of John FordвЂ™s classic western The Searchers inside of a computer. For this miniature transient public installation, I wanted to explore the concept of computers used in filmmaking.
